Yes, they call it one of the great wonders of the world for a reason; a self sustaining mecca of marine life miles away from the mainland. It's quite a sight seeing waves crashing into an invisible barrier of coral in the center of the ocean. And the marine life... phenomenal. Jordan and I both took advantage of the opportunity by doing some diving and snorkeling; seeing "nemo's", bright fish and reef sharks. Really cool!!!

After our day on the ocean and a last party with the farm crew and precious kaleidoscope, it was time to hop on another plane...Destination????

The Outback

The Creation of the D.Q through and through...

From Cairns we jumped on a Qantas flight (the Spirit of Australia.......They payed me to say that) to the center of Australia and the city of Alice Springs. Now for those of you who don't know their Australian geography very well, Alice Springs is about 2000km from anywhere, in the middle of the desert. No joke, it is truly the outback. But it is also the jump off point for some amazing Aussie monuments; Ayers Rock, The Olgas and Kings Canyon. One thing's for sure, we were not about to leave this country without a glimpse at the red center.

Upon arriving at the airport and taking a deep breath of the 37 degree dry desert air, we promptly rented our chariot for the next couple of days, the beautiful Toyota Corolla we would soon refer to only as "Vicki". Where does the name come from you ask, well, it is derived from the D.Q through and through. Confused? Hold on, i'll try and explain...

Now, try and stay with me...

For us Canadians, D.Q refers to the fast food chain and colossus of both hot and cool treats, Dairy Queen. Now Dairy Queen has a little slogan that plays on the whole it's "so hot" it's "cool" thing. Well that's what the outback is folks, "It's So Hot It's Cool". Still with me?? And Vicki, well that comes from the Queen part, referring to the great (I know, debatable) former British monarch Queen Victoria who led Britain in it's great imperial years. Well, in our little adventure "Vicki" would be our transport of choice as we were out to conquer the outback.(This is what goes on inside Jordan's disturbed little mind...) There... Story told, now to the adventure...

Our first day was spent driving west of Alice Springs, visiting gorges, gaps and rock formations before returning to the city for a good nights sleep in preparation for our excursion down South. Upon awaking the next day, we hopped in Vicki and began our journey 450km to the south-west to Uluru National Park and the world's largest monolith Ayers Rock and the Olga ranges. The drive was as they say "most excellent", coasting through the desert with barely a soul on the road. We arrived at the park mid-afternoon and first visited the Olgas where we took pictures and went on a little hike, then it was off to Ayers rock in an attempt to see a glowing sunset. Unfortunately, we weren't so lucky as the clouds began to roll in, but the cold spaghetti was excellent and the beer and goon more than satisfying.

Luckily, the next morning was bright and sunny, as we witnessed the sunrise at Ayers Rock before driving to the other side of this huge monument to climb up it's great edge. The climb is arduous to say the least but people from all over the world take on this great challenge, some with better outcomes than others. The top of the rock offers a magnificent view of the desert countryside, but it is incredibly windy. An awesome time was had though and it made for some great photography.

From Ayers Rock we hopped back into Vicki and headed for Kings Canyon about 300km away. The kilometers melted away in a marathon of "Tool" in the high 30 degree sun. By the time we arrived at Kings Canyon it was 2pm and the temperature was a pleasant 40 degrees. As it was incredibly refreshing we decided to take a 5.5 km hike around the canyon's edges with only the wind and many desert flies to accompany us. Sounds tough I know, but the scenery can only be described as breathtaking. After the completion of our climb we hopped back in our chariot and drove back to Alice Springs as the sun set over the desert savanna, simply amazing.

Our next morning was spent east of Alice Springs before we returned to the city itself, had a much needed shower, said our goodbyes to Vicki and caught our flight to Sydney. Yes, this great adventure will end where it all began 8 months ago, but first we have 6 days to tie up all the loose ends.

The Outback of Australia is something that has to be seen to be believed and in retrospect no trip to this great country would have been complete without it. The D.Q through and through, like the adventures before it only served to remind us of the values of traveling and the marvels of this great world. But enough philosophical psychobabble, off to Sydney!!!

Precious Kaleidoscope goes camping...

Cairns, The Tablelands and Cape Tribulation

Upon arriving in Cairns and checking out the party scene for a couple nights we decided to rent a van, a few tents, get some hot dogs and beans and go on a good old fashioned camping trip. But before I discuss that I must relate an experience of Jordan's, who went to a local bar with a couple of friends and ran into none other than Matthew McCaunahey. That's right all you ladies, Mr. Rothe was within 10 feet of the sexiest man alive himself - I can feel the jealousy through the fiberoptic cable. But on to the trip...

We picked up our Toyota Taurago in the morning and off we went to the tablelands, a beautiful stretch of countryside filled with beautiful gorges, waterfalls and lakes. Day 1 was spent viewing these beautiful landscapes before making camp next to a majestic lake.

As the sun lightened the morning sky on day 2 we were already on the road, passing through small towns on our way to Kurunda, where we took a gondola tour overtop of the rainforest canopy, stopping to view rainforest animals, flora and fauna. We then boarded our van once again and made the trip up towards Cape Tribulation, a world renown beach location about 100km north of Cairns. Our night was spent cooking hot dogs over the fire and camping in the rainforest next to the beach. Simply marvelous!

Day 3 took us to Cape Tribulation and then back down towards Cairns, stopping at a crocodile, snake and animal farm for a tour, some crocodile feeding and an all around good time. Soon another day had passed and we were back camping on the beach. Oh, what a life we lead.

Camping was an awesome time for all; sociables in the car, beach sing songs, roasts, definitely an awesome way to see tropical North Queensland.

From Brisbane to Cairns...

The Creation of Precious Kaleidoscope

As the last week of our farm experience passed, Jordan and I began discussing where to go next and how to get there. The decision for a location was Cairns in far north tropical Queensland and the method of transport we chose was a good old fashioned camper van relocation courtesy of our good friends at Apollo van rentals (remember team Apollo folks?).

As we Canadians are so fond of saying..........................ROAD TRIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The trip from Brisbane to Cairns is a beautiful 1700km journey along the Australian East Coast, but in order to make it economically viable we needed a few traveling companions. Thus the creation of Precious kaleidoscope; consisting of members Jordan, Caroline, Sarah, Hayne and myself. I'm sure you're wondering about the name, the truth is like many things in this trip, it makes no sense! Just a simple boredom induced collaboration of minds between Jordan and Sarah. But we thank them whole heartedly.

We had 3 days to do it and the memories piled up with the miles. Nights in the camper watching Family Guy, games of sociables over boxes of goon and good old fashioned road trip music and conversation. Upon arriving and smelling the amazingly fresh (by comparison to central Bangkok) air we were off to stay with our good friends the Penner's for a week or so. It was there that we searched and found a job that every backpacker has experienced and most dread, the almighty fruit and vegetable picking job.

Our choice product was vegetables and our choice location was a little town called Forest Hill about an hour or so outside of Brisbane. I'll tell you the metropolis that is Brisbane fades very quickly into back country Australia. We stayed at a quaint little working hostel called "Woodstock" where we met loads of great people, some there to make a little cash, some there to extend their visas (which takes 3 months of farm work in this country) Slave labor, I tell ya.

Life on the farm is a world unto its own folks; 4:30am wake up calls, long days cutting cauliflowers or lettuce or sugar loaf or cabbage or whatever in the hot sun... It is not for the faint of heart. But as good Canadian "blokes" we were not about to be deterred by a little back-breaking labor. As time tends to do, it passed, some days quicker than others, but it passed. The main thing that helped? People people people, Irish friends Allan, Fergal, Mullarky, Jane, Laura, Barbarra, Sean, Paul (there was a lot of Irish), English friends Senghi, Caroline, the Scots Jon and Kenny, The Koreans and Japanese (Nikki and Jimmy), Sarah and others....Great Memories!

One things for sure, our tans are better for the experience, we now have intimate knowledge of where our produce comes from and we know every native Australian swear in the book (though we never use any of them). After 3 weeks though, it was time to say goodbye, we had picked our last vegetable in this great country and more adventures beckoned...

Phuket

After 4 nights on Railay it was back to the traveling, this trip consisted of a longboat ride (these are thai style taxi boats that are everywhere), a ride in an open air bus, a ride in the back of a pick-up truck, a ride in a minibus then a ride in another minibus... This my friends is typical traveling in Thailand, it's amazing you ever get where you want to go! They slap a sticker on you and somehow you always arrive where you plan. Magical stickers, only in Thailand! We arrived in Phuket and checked into our guesthouse then roamed the streets and markets, actually found salted bugs at one of them too, delectable.

Our next day in Phuket was spent ensuring we could stay in the country legally for a few more days (our visa's needed extending), planning our elephant trek the next day and booking our flight back to Bangkok, all while trying to stay out of the rain. The next day was beautiful and hot though, perfect for elephant trekking. Eliza was certainly the most energized, giddy you could almost say. Aahhhh, ain't she cute folks? : ) Before the trek we saw a monkey show, sat on waterbuffelos, saw how coconut oil is made, tapped rubber trees and had a lesson in making curry. Really cool stuff. Then it was on to the elephants. We were first given a small show from 3 elephants, who kicked soccer balls for us, danced, painted and picked up various things. It was certainly entertaining! Then it was off on our trek led by our guide through some gorgeous scenery. Eliza was sure to get a picture with her Montana's shirt on. No longer were we little virgins in this Eastern world, but experienced Thai hardcore travellers...and of course there was shopping to be done! We returned to Khao San Rd and promply went to work accomplishing our last goals in Thailand. After checking into our hotel, we each made a list of what we wanted to do and away we went. Our last few days were action packed with all kinds of fun things. We started by visiting the Grand Palace, an absolutely amazing compound full of goegeous temples, palaces and gardens designed in the greatest detail. It's also the home of the royal family; who's billboards, pictures and posters can be seen throughout the country.

From the Grand Palace it was off to the Chatuchat weekend markets. These are possibly the largest markets on the face of the earth with something like 10-15 thousand stalls. Needless to say we found many gifts and trinkets. Some of you readers may be lucky enough to recieve something...if you're worthy... : )

Our last big night out on the town consisted of buckets at a local bar, then a trip to the Pat-pong markets. We arrived just as they were beginning to close, but we still managed to buy some fried grasshoppers and get a little taste of the local cuisine. Also sampled some Thai MacDonalds. Funny, no matter what country you visit, MacDonalds always seems to taste the same. I think it's some kind of conspiracy. Jordan and I also decided to get some custom made suits designed for us because they were "cheap cheap" as well as another little suprise that will not be dicussed at this moment. Don't you just love suprises!

Our next day and Elizabeth's last day was a fairly quiet one, I think we were all a little sad that this incredible month was coming to an end. Spent the day doing some last minute shopping and went out to a great Italian dinner. At 4am Eliza had to catch a cab to the airport, saying goodbye was tough but she's off to conquer the nursing world. We miss you already Miss Eliza!

Our last 2 days in Bangkok were spent doing final suit fittings and celebrating a cool Thai girl named Yo-Yo's birthday. Jordan was lucky enough to discover true love and we also saw Justin Sing and his girlfriend again. Also had to get our last massages, corn on the cob and servings of pat thai and spring rolls.

Thailand is an amazing country in many different ways with a culture totally distinct from any that we'd previously seen. We all agree that we'd love to visit this beautiful area again sometime soon. To Elizabeth, thanks for sharing an incredible month with us, team EL-ORD-ATT will forever be in our hearts. Now it's back to Australia but until then: "You stay classy...PLANET EARTH!!!"

Railay beach

From Phi Phi island we took the quick ferry trip back to the mainland to a place called Railay beach. Unlike the hussle and bussle of the tourist mecca of Phi Phi, Railay is much smaller and layed back. It's divided into two separate beaches only a five minute walk apart and surrounded on both sides by incredible lush mountains. Because of these amazing cliff faces Railay is famous for it's hiking and mountain climbing.
On the way to Railay we ran into a fellow a Edmontonian named Janice, who joined our little adventure for a few days. Railay treated us very well, our bungalow was like a little treehouse, really cool. Spent a few nights at a reggae bar drinking buckets and playing pool, did some all night jammin' at the cliff bar with a bunch of Thai's and foreigners and had a couple of great shish-kebob, baked potato and corn on the cob meals. Highlights though definitely include hiking up over Railay beach (and Jordan's deathdefying climb to a lagoon), sea kiyaking around huge rock formations, cliff diving and caves with sacrificial falluses...very interesting?? Oh, and Daniel Station, we played some Edward 40hands with big thai beers, just for you my friend!!!

Koh Tao, Koh Panghan and Koh Phi Phi

From Koh Samui we hopped on another ferry destined for Koh Tao, the smallest of the eastern islands and island most famous for it's snorkelling and diving. Upon arriving in Koh Tao we found accommodation near the main town at a diving resort called Ban's. Jordan had decided beforehand to take his open water and advanced diving courses there so it became our home for a few days. While Jordan hit the books and water Elizabeth and I spent a day on a snorkelling tour around the island, stopping in various places to view tropical fish and coral. We also rented a quad for a few hours on a rainy day and made our way around the island. Needless to say we had quite the adventure. We spent our nights on the beach, soaking up the sea air. Also had a fun night at a bar that looked like Fred Flinstones house, pretty neat.

While Jordan finished his advanced course(sharks, night dives, more sharks, EEEP!), Elizabeth and I hopped on another ferry destined for the last of the three main islands in the area; Koh Panghan. Koh Panghan is the middle island of the big three. The resort we stayed at on the island was a nice change, much quieter than our previous week and a half. Spent the days laying in the hammock, reading and walking along the beach. Also had another random run-in with an old Spruce Grove friend; Justin Sing and his girlfriend. It never ceases to amaze me how small the world can sometimes be.

As a shake-up to our quiet few days Eliza and I went to the half-moon party, which unlike the massive beach full-moon party, is smaller and takes place in the jungle. We met up with Chris and Ty again and had another memorable night. After three days in Koh Panghan we hopped on a ferry, then bus and headed south to the city of Krabi on the southern ocean. It was there where we reunited with Jordan and were on our way to discover some of the most

beautiful scenery of our lives...

After a day in Krabi, we jumped onto another ferry (we rode on a lot of boats) destined for the tiny island of Koh Phi Phi Don. This area was struck by the heart of the December 2004 tsunami, but you would never know it. It's absolutely pristine. The island of Phi Phi is much smaller than the eastern islands we'd previously visited. In fact cars and other motorized vehicles aren't even allowed on the island. We spend 5 days on this piece of paradise; shopping, sightseeing and partying. The highlight was definetly a day spent touring Koh Phi Phi Lay, Don's small neighbour island made famous in the movie "The Beach." We spent the day diving off our tour boat, sea kayaking, snorkelling, playing frisbee and visiting the most spectacular beach any of us had ever seen on Bamboo Island. Absolutely amazing!!! Other highlights include taking in some Thai boxing (these guys beat up on each other like nothing I've ever seen!), discovering that Jordan has an Irish pub (and looks good in a speedo) and eating some amazing roast beef(Oh Matt...). From Phi Phi it was back to the mainland and on to the famous climbing and hiking area of Railay beach...

Thailand

Bangkok and Koh Samui

Jordan and I arrived in the legendary city of Bangkok towards midnight. After getting our bags and negotiating a price for the cab ride we were off to the heart of the city. One thing's for certain, even from a cab in the middle of the night it was clear that Thailand and Bangkok would be a much different adventure than Australia. As morning dawned, Jordan and I were off to Khao San road, the famous tourist road in Bangkok. This small stretch of street is littered with hotels, bars, shops and stands selling everything your little heart could desire. We arrived, found a hotel then decided to do some investigating. On a little stop inside a 7 eleven for some water we were amazed to run directly into a face from my past back home. A friend named Chris Watson, who I haden't seen since my high school days. He had just arrived from Canada with his buddy Ty on a 6 month trip around South-East Asia. We promptly decided some beers were in order. The next 5 or 6 hours we aquainted ourselves with a selection of Thai beers and visited one of Bangkok's legendary markets and red light districts; Pat-Pong markets. We'll just say that everyone should experience this area. Once you see it, you'll never forget it.

By 10pm it was time to head to the airport and meet a new arrival to our journey; the incredible, the amazing and the beautiful Elizabeth Munch (she forced me to say that).
After a little searching we were reunited with Elizabeth, and although she was tired from her long journey and a little mad with us (because we originally went to the wrong terminal) she was happy to see us. It was great seeing her again and energized this part of our journey. Thus begins the legendary journey of the fabulous Canadian super-group: EL-ORD-ATT!!

We spent the next couple of days shopping, made a visit to Soi Cowboy (another famous Bangkok red light area...yes they have a few) and planning the next few weeks of our adventure. From Bangkok the three of us jumped on an overnight train heading south, destined for the town of Surat Thani. The train trip was awesome, a really good way to see the Thai countryside. Even met 3 friendly Kiwis and chatted with them to pass the time.

From Surat Thani we quickly jumped on a ferry and headed for the biggest of the three main eastern islands; Koh Samui. On Koh Samui we got our first taste of the Thai beaches and sunshine. We managed to find a nice little resort on the coast and immeadiately began working on our tans. We quickly found out that Thailand is as it's described...a little piece of paradise. Restaurants on the beach, vendors, sandy beaches, picturesque coastline. It was decided that we would celebrate Jordan's belated birthday and our trip by indulging in a little taste of home. Elizabeth in her infinite wisdom brought with her a beautiful bottle of Gibson's Finest rye whiskey. It was a long anticipated moment for us all.

Spent the next few days taking in the sights, went to a tiger and bird show and attended a legendary full moon party. Imagine 10-15 thousand people partying all night on one stretch of beach, VERY INTENSE!!! We had a great time to say the least, although the transport there and back was a bit of a hassle. Our experiences in Bangkok and Koh Samui would set the tone for what would be a memorable month of adventures, sights, sand and memories.

<img style="FLOAT: right; Landed in Sydney in the early hours and promptly checked into our old Sydney home; The Funkhouse. It was pretty much the same as we left it, but with a new big screen t.v! We were also fortunate and grateful enough to find ESPN and Oilers hockey. Game 6 was brilliant, game 7...well let's just not even go there...

ANYWAY, after a few days in Sydney we booked ourselves a bus up to Byron Bay, a beautiful little surf town about 800km north of Sydney. Although the bus ride was a little hellish (16 hours overnight in very uncomfortable seats, Jordan got the flu), Byron Bay is a town that must be seen. We stayed at a great little hostel just outside of town called The Arts Factory. Situated on a 6 acre complex complete with bungaloes, teepees, wild turkeys and everything and anything artsy, it was a great little place. Met some good people there too; The Dutch boys, the girls from Sydney and Alex, also from Sydney. Great all around time except for a little rain.

On our fourth day in Byron we decided to take a day tour to the infamous town of Nimbin. Nimbin was first described to us soon after we arrived as something that needed to be seen to be believed. Having now seen it, I agree whole heartedly with that statement. Our tour guide, Fred was quite the character himself, a little spacey with tunes blaring and dreds waving, but he was nothing compared to some of the people we met on the streets when we arrived. All in all it was a great day of fun...from what I remember of it anyway : )

After 5 days in Byron it was up the coast through Surfers Paradise to the Gold Coast where we were lucky enough to be able to stay with Al and Pat Penner at their beautiful home on Hope Island. I'll tell you, after 4 months of hostels and hostel eating patterns, a home cooked meal is something not to be taken lightly. We were lucky enough to spend the week there with the Penner's as well as Devon friends Stew and Dallas. Our days were spent going for runs around the compound, using the gym, looking for work and watching Big Brother and Rocky movies. All and all, it was a very relaxing week or so. Thanks must go to Al and Pat for inviting us into their home and treating us like one of the family for a week. It was appreciated more than you know.

From Hope Island, it was off to Brisbane; Australia's most northern large city. It was here that our journey went through a bit of a change...

The Touché Experience

Consisting of Jordan Rothe (The River of Jordan), Matt Schellenberger (The Germ), Christopher Tanner (Suntanner), Richard Pyatt (Rocksteady Rich) and Robert Passey (The Rocket)

Cheers also to temporary member James, LEGEND

Famous Experience phrases or trip related phrases:

"Touché or Touched"
"Godspeed"
"What?! or FORGET-ABOUT-IT!!" A charming little harbour city, we instantly settled in. After checking in, having some cheap Dominos and a couple of beers, it was out to scope out the town with friends Lee and Chloe. Chloe, having lived there for a few months, was nice enough to take us to all the great nightspots. We spent the night having fun, with Jordan and Tanner playing their new dice game, inspired by their combined reading of "The Dice Man".

The following few days were spent exploring Wellington. Jordan and I had a good day going through one of New Zealand's best museums, Te Papa, complete with a tour of the Lord of the Rings exhibition playing at the museum. Saw some really incredible stuff. We also took the opportunity to visit NZ's parliament building referred to as "The Honeycomb". On simple examination the reason for the nickname becomes immeadiately clear.

After three nights in Wellington it was back on the bus and off to Taupo. A city in the center part of the North Island on the side of Lake Taupo, NZ's largest lake. Taupo is also the center for skydiving in New Zealand, with single jumps costing only $150(about $115 CAD). On the way to Taupo we also visited the site of Mount Doom from the Lord of the Rings films. Upon seeing the volcano, your mind immeadiatly settles back into memories of the film. Everything was there except for the lava and Frodo and Sam. We arrived at our hostel later that afternoon and spent the night out, but the knowledge that all 5 of us were jumping out of a plane the next morning made for an early evening.

The next morning was absolutely beautiful, not a cloud in the sky. After getting up and having a quick bite to eat, it was off to the jumpsite. Upon arriving Rich, Rob and I were rushed into our jumpsuits and given our prep instructions. Jordan and Tanner would jump on the next flight. After final instructions and meeting our jumpmasters we were thrown into the plane and off to 12,000 feet. Although we were all nervous, excitement soon took hold. The door opened and we were off into the sky. There are few words that can describe the sensation, it's truly amazing, like flying(Jordan: Good call Matt). The freefall lasted 45 seconds although it felt like 5, then the chute opened and calm took hold as you drift slowly to the ground. After our jump, Jordan and Tanner were sent up on the next plane for their jump. We all agreed that it was the best thing we did all trip.

After a few party nights in Taupo (cheers to Sam and Candida), it was off to the stinky city of Rotorua. It was a nice town, sadly the smell brings Hinton to shame because of all the thermal activities. But we powered through to play some golf, party a little and then it was off to Auckland, the largest city in NZ at 1.4 million people. Upon our arrival in Auckland and checking into our hostel, we prepared for a big night. Not only was it our last night partying with English girls Suzi and Jo, but it was also the first World Cup game for England(I'm England Til I Die!!!). It was a great night, partied with the boys, one last hoorah with Sooz and Jo, and good old Johnny, dude you had a bit too much. Final score England 1, Paraguay 0.

After a day of rest we were off to Paihia at the tip of the North Island and the famous location of the Bay of Islands. This was our last Kiwi Experience trip and although we were becoming a little tired of the big green bus we were determined to go out in a blaze of glory (cheesy Bon Jovi reference). The rain cramped our style a little bit but we still managed to have some great barbeques, sing some kareoke, play some darts and do some bar quiz's. On the last day the weather cooperated and Rob and I went golfing on a great little course while Jordan, Tanner and Rich went fishing in the Bay. It was a good day on all accounts, then it was back to Auckland, our final day in NZ beckoned.

The Touché Experience was not going to go quietly. Our last day together called for celebration, La Porchetta for a pizza meal before heading to the Globe bar for 2 for 1 beers and gold fish racing. The night soon became a blur of touche related fun and before we knew it the time was 4am and another England soccer game was on. We watched the first half before heading to bed. The next morning we woke bright and early, said our heartfelt goodbyes (godspeed men, godspeed) and it was off to the airport. New Zealand will be a highlight of this trip and an experience we will remember forever. Thanks to all those who shared it with us.

Queenstown

The next stop on our trip was Queenstown. Although we'd been warned about all the amazing experiences that were available there, looking back I think we were still suprised. Queenstown calls itself the adventure and extreme sports capital of the world and it sure lives up to its name. A beautiful little city of about 15,000 siting next to a large lake under "The Remarkables" mountain range(as seen in the second Lord of the Rings film). Queenstown reminded us of Banff on steroids. However, before arriving in Queenstown, our bus stopped at the first ever commercial bungy site, a bridge overlooking the Kawarau river. Although neither Jordan nor I were planning on jumping that day, it took only 15 minutes and a little arm twisting and we were both on the platform, looking down at the river below. In quick succession Jordan flung himself off the bridge, followed by myself. It was truly an amazing rush, one definetly worth repeating.

Following our jumps we made our way into Queenstown and checked into our hostel. The nightlife in Queenstown is legendary and we were looking forward to getting a taste. Queenstown also marked the end of the line for our now tightly knit group of 40 or so, after a group photo and some dinner curtesy of Fergburger (I have seriously never seen bigger burgers in my life), it was off for a great night out on the town.

While we were busy getting the night started, Jordan was busy flinging himself off another bungy platform, referred to as "The Ledge". Earlier that day, Jordan had decided that one bungy was simply not enough and therefore signed up for "The Thrilogy" which combines "The Bridge", "The Ledge" and "The Nevis" (this being one of the largest bungy's in the world at 134m or 8 seconds of freefall). Overlooking the town at dusk, Jordan threw himself flipping off the ledge into the night. Who does that?

Upon Jordan's return to civilization, out the group went for one last blissful night together. The night was fantastic, as were many of the following nights hitting the streets of the town. Must send our love to Sion and Heather, Lee (from Scotland), Emily, Chloe, the Swedes (WHAT?), Q, James, Da Boys, a truly great succession of nights.

When we were not out partying, we were busy doing many of the activities which Queenstown has become famous for. Jordan awoke the morning after our first night just in time to fall into a canyon, Rich and Tanner decided to jump off the ledge, Rob went paragliding, we went frolfing (a combination of frisbee and golf) and the group went lugeing down the top of a mountain overlooking Queenstown. I can only describe that as a "ripping good time", racing down a track with your mates, laughing, bumping into each other and falling all over the place.
On the fifth or sixth day in our resort paradise I met my destiny by doing my canyon swing. The canyon swing is unique to Queenstown, it's a swing that combines a 60m freefall with a 200m arc at 150kph, very INTENSE. I had won a free swing by having the worst taste in our "bad taste" party. I must say I was a little nervous, but I ended up liking it so much that I did it twice. Once in what is described as the pindrop position or straight down and once in "gimp boy" or hanging upside down. As a bonus Jack Osbourne, son of Ozzy himself, was there filming an adventure series, we had a quick conversation and photo, nice guy.

Our week in Queenstown was truly amazing, a highlight in a trip full of highlights. Following a week there Jordan and I came to the conclusion that were not ready to leave NZ and therefore decided to extend our trip by 3 weeks, allowing us to keep the Touché Experience together and see the North Island. So up we went through Christchurch and Kaikoura again, then off to Picton to catch a ferry to Wellington. Beautiful scenary along the way, saw pods of dolphins and lots of water. All hail the South Island, but the call of the North Island was too much to ignore. Stay tuned...

The South Island--West Coast

The West Coast of NZ can easily be described as the most beautiful natural scenery that we've ever seen. Seaside coasts, sprawling lush hills, ocean carved caverns, glaciers surrounded by rainforest, and on and on. Our coastal adventure began in Nelson, located at the very north of the South Island. We stayed in a hotel type hostel which was "Sweet As" (as New Zealander's like to say). Pretty quiet little city of about 50,000 people along the coast. We went for a walk and also discovered that mysteriously Jordan and I had bought the exact same coats from the exact same tiny store in Christchurch as our new friends Tanner and Rob. Although this may sound a little random, it became the beacon for many jokes throughout our travels. Once again some poker was played, we met English guy Dale, known for getting incredibly drunk and losing large amounts of money (to our advantage). Also met Claire (The Shark), Chloe, and American dude from Colorado Jessie ("sick bro"). The English threesome also made their mark; Suzy, Cat and Joe. All in all, it was a good couple of days laying the roots for what would become and amazing group as we moved down the coast.

Next stop on our journey was Westport. Before arriving that night however, Jordan was dared to climb a gigantic tree, we stopped at a picturesque lake and began to get to know our way-cool bus driver "Q". What was becoming plainly obvious was that this was no ordinary tour, this was a tour that would involve a lot of amazing experiences and a lot of out of control partying. But more of that to come. Westport brought our first "adventure experience" as we went jetboating up a nearby river. Quite an experience motoring up rapids sometimes only 10 inches deep in an 800 hp boat, doing three-sixties and having an all around good time. The evening brought drinking contests, more meeting of friends and the eating of chicken ceasers... I still remember that, they must have been really good. Anyway...

Our next night brought us to Lake Mahinapua and the amazing "dress up party". This is an event where each kiwi bus on the South Island is lucky enough to enjoy. Every night a bus stops at this remote little pub, where only the members of the bus are allowed in the pub. We have an amazing steak dinner, have some beers on the beach, dress up in our costumes and celebrate. It's intended to get all the people on the bus acquainted with each other and oh does it work. Our theme was "bad taste" so everyone arrived at about 8pm slightly inebriated, dress in very suitable attire and the festivities began. Many random pictures were taken, many spontaneous dances/sing-a-longs occurred and another great night went down into the books. I could go into more detail, but this is a family blog... Worth mentioning about the night, however, was the meeting of James (cool English guy who would become a temporary member of The Touché Experience), Camilla (cute Swedish girl), and the rest of the Swedish girls, Karin, Emily and the other one(that's seriously what she called herself...) "FORGET-ABOUT-IT!"

The next day we awoke at 9am feeling like we'd been hit by several trucks. Our destination was Franz Josef and Fox glaciers and we couldn't get there soon enough. What made things worse was that Jordan and I had a fate with destiny that afternoon, jumping out of a plane. Upon arriving in Franz we organized our hike for the next day and proceeded to jump on a van to take us to Franz Josef skydiving center. Nervousness led to excitement as we waited our turn to fly to 12,000 feet. Unfortunately it was not our day, right before our intended jumping time mother nature reared her head and brought showers, making diving impossible. Our skydive would have to wait. For now...

Morning in Franz Josef brought more rain. We were scheduled to do a day glacier climb rain or shine so after suiting up in our gear, away we went. Franz Josef glacier has the distinction of being one of only two glaciers in the world that sits in harmony with rainforest, it's essentially a massive piece of ice in the middle of lush vegetation, incredibly beautiful. But man, did it rain, and rain, and rain.. about 200mm in one day. Although soaked to the bone and cold, we climbed the glacier with pick in hand and talonz on our feet. Very beautiful, but as I said, extremely wet. Hot chocolate was welcomed by the cupload when we returned.
I'd like to say that the next morning was incredibly beautiful and sunny, but no, it was raining. Unfortunately, that meant another cancelled skydive. So, down the West Coast we went to our next stop, Lake Wanaka. Wanaka, like most South Island cities was picturesque and accommodating. Although many people stay several days there, we were due in Queenstown the next day. We spent the night playing poker and enjoying in-suite television (a rarity in hostels). The next morning we went to a crazy little museum that combines visual pleasures, mazes and creative puzzles. Like kids in a candy store, we were let loose for a few hours. After that adventure it was off to the first ever commercial bungy site in the world and the beginning of the Queenstown experience...

NEW ZEALAND

A new day dawns and a new country full of new adventures awaits! We got into Christchurch(Pronounced Ch-Ch by the locals) midday and were surprised how similar it was to our home and native land. A little strange seeing the leaves change colours in May but it was a little taste of home that we never got to experience in Sydney. Upon our arrival, our plans were as they always are, to fly by the seat of our pants. Partied for a few days with the good people we were meeting from our hostel(English GALORE!), took pictures, saw the sights, even played chess in Cathedral Square. We ended up meeting a couple from Grande Prarie who raved about the KiwiExperience as the best way to see New Zealand. They did the entire country, but we decided that we only had time to do the South Island and from what they said, the hop on/hop off bus pass of Kiwi sounded good to us. So on Sunday morning, we were on our way up the East coast to a small town called Kaikoura.

Kaikoura was a beautiful little town on the east coast of the South Island. Upon arriving and checking into our hostel we decided to take a little walk. Halfway through our little trek the weather began to scowl, but a little wind and rain was not to stop us. We visited some seals laying on the beach, played with some sheep grazing on the sidehills and generally just got our first taste on the New Zealand countryside. B-E-A-U-tiful!

We must also mention the following day, as this day marked the beginning of what would become a special group of people as we travelled the rest of the country. Meeting to play a game of poker in Kaikoura, what would become the "Touché Experience" composed of English friends Rob (Rocket Robbie), Chris (sunTanner), Rich (Rocksteady), Jordan(The River of Jordan) and Matt (The Germ) was born. The poker was great and the experience awesome, something that would be repeated many times over the next weeks. Following Kaikoura, it was off to Nelson and the beginning of NZ majestic West Coast...

Adelaide/Team Apollo

The end of the Great Ocean Road brought us (after a 9 hour bus ride) to the South Australian city of Adelaide, a quaint little city about the size of Edmonton. We arrived about 5am and after some random walking around and a well deserved shower, we met up with Anna, a true Aussie chick who's family was generous enough to put us up for the week. Their house was in the hills surrounding Adelaide and came complete with geese, a cow, a possum, an 80 year old talking cockatoo, poteroos (miny kangaroos) and two pet kangaroos - "Roo"and "Fergus". Needless to say we were quite happy to get our first taste of the "true Australia" outside of the hostel lifestyle. We spent the week learning about Australian Rules Football(footy), meeting Anna's friends, going on pub crawls, eating cheap chinese food, going to the beach and eating some good home cooked meals (go corn on the cob!!!). We both really enjoyed our time there, cheers to Anna, Elise, Sam, Louis, the aminamals and "the parents" for letting us into their wonderful home and putting up with two Canadian boys.

From Adelaide we decided to return to the great city of Sydney in search of the all mighty dollar. But the story does not end there, the 1500kim trip from Adelaide to Sydney would spawn one of the most amazing teams that had been seen since the '72 series ended...The birth of "Team Apollo"! Comprised of Jordan, Matt, now good friend Bob and new German extraordinaire Simon, we were a four man recking crew. With a nearly free rented Apollo van, three days, 1500km, a lot of great tunes and nothing but piss and vinegar we were sent on our mighty journey. Although none of us had ever drove a standard van on the other side of the road before we were all confident that death would not be our eternal fate. Day one comprised of team Si-bob with Simon's hardcore driving, Bob's many stalls and some guitar playing in the back of the van. Day two team Jord-att took over, covering 800km with only Incubus, Tool and others to guide our way. By Day three team Apollo entered the city of Sydney with a true Aussie road trip to their name. The experience will not be forgotten.

Upon arriving in Sydney we moved in to a flat with two friends from Ontario; Julie and Kerry, during that month work was done, many movies watched, goon was drank, the Oilers incredible cup run began, Matt lit his face on fire and that's about it. But then we heard of a little country called New Zeland...

Great Ocean Road

Melbourne was good to us, free poker tournaments, cheap pizza and nachos, great people, but it was time to move on in our journey. We got in touch with an Australian friend of ours whom we met backpacking in Edmonton around halloween last year, Ana. Ana said that we would be more then welcome to stay at her place if we decided to go to Adelaide, so off to Adelaide we went. We had been told by countless people that the Great Ocean Road was "great" so we(Matt, Jordan and Bob) booked a 3 day tour. The GOR is a section of highway that runs for about 200km along the South coast after Melbourne. And as you can tell from the pictures, it's one of the most scenic drives in the world. The 12 Apostles, London Bridge, koalas, and a crazy Aussie tour guide named Peter. We finished the GOR in a day and a half then made our way into the Grampian mountain range for some hikeing and kangaroo dodging in our bus. After going a month and only seeing roos in zoos, we were having a hard time making our way around without picking them off the highways. Coming from the Rockies, the Grampians looked like baby mountains, but the views from the top made up for their puny stature. We spent the night in a cabin in the middle of the mountains, had an Aussie BBQ, sang songs around the fire and watched the most amazing stars I've ever seen! Our tour seemed to end as quickly as it began in a little city by the name of Ballarat and from there we hoped on the overnight bus to Adelaide for 8 hours of drug induced slumber. Ahhh Gravol...

Canberra/Melbourne

3 Hours after departing Sydney we found ourselves in the most exciting place in the world, Canberra, the nations capital!!!!! Ahh sarcasm... Nice place to visit for a day but anything more would be tedious indeed. Their claim to fame is the awe inspiring water-jet memorial to Captain Cook that fires once every hour and the modernized capital building. AMAZING. It was a nice break from the crazyness of Sydney anyways before we made our way to Melbourne. We arrived at the host city of the Commonwealth Games at 11:00pm on St. Patrick's Day after the 8 hour bus ride. Needless to say we had some catching up to do :) Melbourne really went all out for these games, apparently it was an even 3 years in the making, and it showed. There were free shows every day and night, the population of the city doubled overnight and it was a party all the time! The people of Melbourne were a lot more layed back and easy-going then in Sydney as well. We FINALLY got to see a kangaroo, even though it was a prisoner in the Melbourne Zoo. We spent the next 2 weeks getting to know our hostel-mates, playing in poker tournaments and eating free pancakes for breakfast. Nothing tastes better at 7:00am after a loooong night :) We even got in touch with Ayeala, it was great to see her again. Also met up with our American friend Bob whom we met in Sydney. He's a great guy and a blast to party with. He stayed at the Coffee Palace hostel with us for a couple days and decided to accompany us on the next leg of our journey...

Matt + Bob + Goon =

Sydney

For those of you out of the loop, Matt and Jordan are half way around the world! Australia to be exact. We left "sunny" Canada on February 28th and arrived in Sydney on March 2nd. What exactly happened to the 1st we're still not sure, but we blame the Russians. We spent the first few days of our journey doing the tourist thing, checking out the sights(Opera House from the Bridge, above), the city and enjoying the beautiful weather.
Going from -15 to +30 is such a shocking experience. It took us all of 3 1/2 minutes to get used to. Mwahaha! We hopped from hostel to hostel, meeting great people along the way, sitting on various beaches such as Bondi(above) and basking in our newfound paradise. The unfortunate thing about being in the city is that we didn't get to see any authentic Australian animals, 2 weeks in Oz and not one kangaroo sighting! Apparently there are over 60 million of them, so we were bound to see some eventually. But we did get the pleasure of gazing at downtown Sydney at night(left).
